StaffWayne Putman began serving
as Senior Pastor of the Church of God of Exeter on January 1,
2006. Previously, he served in three ministry positions at one
church in Dallas, Texas for twenty nine years: fourteen years as
Senior Pastor, two years as Associate Pastor of Worship,
Evangelism and Discipleship and thirteen years as Associate
Pastor of Worship and Youth. Wayne has held various positions in
the district and state ministries of the Church of God in Texas.
He also served for four years as the Texas State Youth Director.
Wayne began a personal relationship with Jesus Christ when he
was only eight years old. Even as a child he sensed that one day
he would become a pastor of a local church. After a brief time
of rebellion during his college years (“because I was running
from God’s plan”) he knew he would only be fulfilled and at
peace with himself and with God when he surrendered to God’s
call for his life. After graduating from Dallas Baptist
University, Wayne began to serve full time in pastoral ministry,
while continuing his education at Dallas Theological Seminary.
Wayne and his wife, Pat, were married in
1976. They were both born and raised in the church in Dallas
where Wayne served on staff. Pat has ministered to others in
many “behind the scenes,” areas of the church, including women’s
ministry, support groups, and youth ministry. She often uses her
gifts of mercy and helps to encourage others.
Wayne and Pat have three grown children and
four grandchild (so far!). Chad, and his wife, Jessica, and
their three children live in Little Rock, AR. Chad’s in his 5th
year of surgical residency in Otolaryngology (Ear, Nose and
Throat). Eric is the Junior High Youth Pastor at Grace
Community Church in Visalia, California. He graduated from
Mid-America Christian University in Oklahoma City and served in
a two-year internship in Junior High ministry at Saddleback
Church. Amy is a licensed esthetician (skin care specialist).
She has worked at a Day Spa in Texas since September, 2003. She
and her daughter, Ashlyn, live in the Dallas Metroplex.
Wayne enjoys music, golf and developing
relationships that go below the surface. Wayne and Pat enjoy
spending time with one another talking about “whatever is on our
minds.” They like to go out to dinner and catch a movie with
friends (although finding an appropriate movie can be a
challenge!). They both are deeply committed to Christ, their
family, and fulfilling God’s purposes for their lives.
Wayne explains his philosophy of
leadership:
“My leadership style is
highly relational. I love to lead and work with groups of people
to carry out God’s vision and direction. People must enjoy doing
ministry together otherwise they are probably not in the right
kind of ministry. Synergy happens when God’s people work
together and when everyone wants God alone to receive the
credit! I believe in delegating responsibility and authority to
people who are gifted and available for ministry.
Micro-management isn’t necessary when you have the right people
in the right places of ministry. Everyone in ministry, including
the Sr. Pastor, needs to be accountable for how they live life.
Accountability is helping and encouraging others to keep their
commitments to God. Ultimately, we’re all going to be
accountable to the Lord one day! There’s nothing more exciting
than a group of people committed to following God together and
giving Him the glory!”
