We Choose to honor

big things come from small choices

It was Memorial Day of 2012. We had invited Chief Bush and the Exeter Police Department to our church to honor them and pray for them without a tragedy reminding us how important they were.

That day opened up our hearts in new ways. We began to wave to all officers and while waving pray a prayer of blessing of them and their families. This unlocked new desires to honor them with words and acts of service. Thank you cards were written and meals began to be delivered to the department on a bi-weekly basis. Kingdom life began to flow because of honor.

More than acts of service and words of honor, relationships began to form. People in our church began to know officers by name and officers began to understand there were no strings attached! Through it all we kept doing these simple gestures of love and honor. Over the course of four years the momentum grew until Pastor Michael and Chief Bush knew it was time to take the message of honor further and broader into Exeter.

Hundreds of gift bags were handed out at the We Choose Sunday. Inside of the gift bag were a We Choose mug to act as a visible reminder of the choices to remember, to honor, and to pray. Each mug also contained an assignment for honor for one of the seven agencies of leadership in Exeter. With the assignment came three simple instructions:

  1. PRAY on a daily basis for the agency assigned to you.
  2. Send a note or gift expressing THANK YOU to your aread of Exeter leadership.
  3. SHARE YOUR STORY to inspire more honor around you.

Besides this tool and others, there was also included a City of Exeter Gift Certificate for $5. We asked that one of two things happened with that gift:

  • ACCEPT IT AS A GIFT to use and find a way to invest it back into the city with a local merchant of your choice.
  • PAY IT FORWARD as a gift to someone with whom you come into contact.
