We Choose to pray

OUR world needs prayer

From terrorist attacks abroad to local acts of violence, our news feeds are filled with atrocities that leave us unsettled, insecure, and afraid. The rate at which we hear the news and the scope from which we draw our news can lead to daunting circumstances. Often there is even a paralysis or numbness or anger that arises.

In Philippians, Paul instructs,

"Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus."

More than anything we need this peace in our day and age in order to continue to represent Jesus well where we are planted.

In Matthew 6, Jesus told the disciples they should pray in this manner,

Pray like this:
Our Father in heaven,
may your name be kept holy.
May your Kingdom come soon.
May your will be done on earth,
    as it is in heaven.
Give us today the food we need,
and forgive us our sins,
as we have forgiven those who sin against us.
And don’t let us yield to temptation,
but rescue us from the evil one.

In these beautiful verses we find six lenses through which to bathe anything in prayer.

Father, your name is holy and righteous. Let your holiness and righteousness reign in hearts, minds, and in our country as a whole.

Father, bring your Kingdom in all of its fullness into every aspect of our society. Let your Kingdom reign in our nation as it is in heaven.

Thank you Father that you provide for our daily needs. Teach us to be thankful for what we have and to seek you as provide. Let contentment eradicate greed in our culture and in our hearts.

Thank you for the forgiveness you have made available to us. We need your forgiveness for all the ways we live outside of your will. And we choose to extend forgiveness to those who have hurt us-- even when it's hard.

Father, lead us away from the sins that we are so easily prone to struggle with. Give us eyes to see the ways you have opened doors out of the temptations we face.

Father, deliver our country from evil. Start with us. Free us from the habits and beliefs that lead us away from you.
